About the Artist

The artworks Thomas Whitbeck comprise a collection of nature-themed works completed over the span of several decades, from the early 80’s to early 2000’s, and embody a true artist’s lifelong passion for Southern wildlife, flora and fauna. His passion for the outdoors was a hallmark of his identity that gave way to stunning works of art was cultivated from childhood. Growing up in the backwoods of Tuscaloosa Alabama, much of Thom’s childhood was spent outdoors - fishing, hunting, climbing trees and playing among the wildlife.

From a young age he showed great interest in drawing and painting, and his artistic skills and creative nature became distinguished from youth. Thom began photographing birds, woodland creatures and plant life to use as reference for his sketches. His early works consist of mostly graphite on paper, as this added an element of control that he had not yet developed with a paintbrush. However, after many years of self-taught theory and patience, Thom mastered paint on canvas and many of his most vibrant, colorful works were created using purely water color. His fine layering methodology create a depth in his works that mimic reality. His talent for realism became publicly recognized when he entered his works in The Cinco Ranch Area Art League, winning top prizes and blue ribbons. His works hung in the Houston Art Gallery and the Louisiana Art Gallery for many months, and he eventually sold several copies of his original works.

His untimely death on July 4th, 2006, left behind his beloved wife, two children, a large community of coworkers, many dear friends and family, and his masterful works of southern countryside and wildlife. Thom’s artwork became illustrations of a talent unparalleled, and a life cherished by many. To honor his memory and give his work the exposure it deserves, this online gallery is a tribute of a loving father with artistic talents the world should know.
